[UPDATED]
Back in those days when Malaysians have to file their taxes manually, it was an annual responsibility for me to help my father as he does not understand Malay. I was blessed that the government has implemented online tax filing when it was my turn to file my own taxes. However, I still had to make a trip to the LHDN office to get my first time password and I remembered I was complaining the whole journey despite it was for future convenience sake.
With the continuous advancement of technology, Malaysians now are able to obtain their first time password for e-filing with just a few clicks away! In this article, we will share with you the step-by-step guide in retrieving your first time login password (if this is your first time filing your tax online) and as well as the step-by-step guide in filing your tax online. Do ensure that you have all available information prepared in hand. Kindly refer to the checklist we have prepared for you at the end of the article to cross check your information.
OBTAINING FIRST TIME LOGIN PASSWORD
For first time online users to file your taxes, below are the simple steps in obtaining your first time login password.
STEP 1
Proceed to the LHDN official website under e-daftar, you will then have to fill in your information accordingly. If you are an employee, you are only required to fill out Item 1 & 2 whereas if you are an employer, you are required to fill out all items. These items in the application form include:
1) Personal Individual Information
2) Employment and Employer’s Information
3) Business Information – If Any
Employer Registration File (If you want to register employer file)
4) Tax Agent Information
STEP 2
Once you have completed filling the application, you will then be required to upload the front of your Identity Card to the website. Do ensure the photo is in .gif format and the size allowed must be from 40kb and not more than 60kb. There are a few methods which you can use:
1) Scan your IC with a scanner or printer
2) Take a photo of your IC with your phone
STEP 3
After uploading your identity card, you will receive your Application Number. This application number is very important as it is needed to get your pin number and reference number when your application is approved a few days later. Therefore, it is advisable for you to immediately jot down the number or take a photo of it.
STEP 4
Check your application status after 2 to 3 days from this link using your application number. You will then retrieve your pin number and reference number if the application is successful.
STEP 5
The final step is for you to go to this link and click on “Login Kali Pertama” or you can just directly go to this link. Just fill in your pin number and reference number to log in. Once you have successfully log in, do change your password for data protection.
GUIDE FOR E-FILING
STEP 1
Click on this link to the official LHDN website. You can choose your preferred language – Malay or English. Once you have successful log in with your ID number and password, the following screen will appear as below. Proceed to select e-Form/e-Borang under e-Filing category.
STEP 2
As you reach this page, click on the revelant e-Form according to your income source and also select the correct year of assessment. If you are employed, your selection would be e-BE. On the other hand, if you’re an employer or business owner, do select e-B.
STEP 3
There will be 4 sections in e-BE tax return form to be filled out whereas e-B tax return form will have 5 sections. The first sections for both forms will need you to complete your personal data. Although you will find that most information have been automatically filled out, do a thorough check to ensure the information are correct.
STEP 4
The second section of the tax return form generally requires declaration of any form of statutory income, total income, and non-employment income for the year. In e-BE form, employees only need to extract the information from the EA form provided by your company unless you have other source of income such as rental.
On the other hand, business owners will need a set of detailed account to determine their income/profit for the year after taking into account of all the business expenditures. I would suggest you to hire a professional accountant or tax agent to help you with this.
STEP 5
The third section of filing your tax is very important as this will help you to reduce your chargeable income and eventually reduces the amount of tax payment. Just key in all your relevant tax reliefs, tax rebates and tax exemptions accordingly. Do ensure that you have receipts as proof for every tax reliefs that you are intending to claim for at least 7 years. In addition, there are some clauses and terms to certain tax relief which you must be aware of. You can read them in this article “Things you Might Not Know About Personal Tax”.
STEP 6
Business owners will have an additional section to fill out in your e-B form. In this section, you are required to submit your business’ full set of detailed account. This is compulsory or you may end up in a lot of trouble. As previously mentioned, I would recommend you to hire a professional accountant or tax agent to help you with this. You can hire one from Kaodim.com.
STEP 7
Finally, you will see your total chargeable income, total taxes you need to pay or tax return in the last section of Summary/Rumusan. Do a final check on all information and ensure that there are no mistakes. If there is, do make the necessary changes before clicking on Continue/Teruskan which will direct you to the last confirmation page of your tax filing.
STEP 8
In this page, you will be given 3 options to click:
-
- Print Draft / Cetak Draf Borang – You will get your draft in PDF and you can choose to print it out
-
- Sign & Submit / Tandatangan & Hantar – By clicking this, it will means that you have already accepted and acknowledged that your tax return form is correctly filled out.
